It can match the rest of the kitchen furniture and blend in with the overall design or it can be used as a contrasting focal point. The fact that island is usually in the center room makes is a great decor elements which can redefine the whole look of the kitchen. If you want it to match the rest of the kitchen, you have two options, you either use the same materials as with the rest of the kitchen or the same colors. A lot of kitchen islands are solid with counter doors which allow for extra storage space under the island. However, the island doesn’t need to be a storage facility as it is a lot easier to design it as a table, in which case, you must focus mainly on the material of the top which should either be made of marble or treated wood.

The way you decorate your kitchen island mainly depends on its purpose. For example, if you have a small kitchen and you plan on using the island for preparing the food, you might want to integrate a small sink and a garbage disposal in the island. On the other hand, if you have a big kitchen, which you will also be using for dining, the island should be spacious and it should have the purpose of a dining table. Massive wood tables are very stylish and they go particularly well with rustic kitchens or industrial designs.

The kitchen island décor is greatly influenced by the lighting elements which are usually positioned above it. The lighting elements have a deep impact on the design of the room and big fixtures are preferred by most people who are redecorating their kitchens. Pendant lights are the moat popular type of lighting fixtures but you can also choose more sophisticated fixtures such as chandeliers. It all depends on the overall style of your kitchen.

  • Decorations

As the kitchen island has a functional purpose, it does not include a lot of decorations. Most islands only have a centerpiece which is either a vase of a fruit basket. It is better to choose a fruit bowl because it is easier to arrange. You can stack it with whatever fresh fruit or vegetables you have around the house. If you use a vase, you would have to make sure that you constantly have fresh flowers.
